Cool Direct vs Dish

I don't understand why is it that you can use an FTA with DN and not Direct?
Especially now that there using the same encryption method. What is it that's so different between the two swstems? I'm kinda from the old school of satellite I had and still do have a 12' Wineguard dish mounted a long side and above my roof with a dual feed Ku/C band lnb's. I threw out the receiver after quite a while, esecially when we went to the newer stuff. But I remember receiving 15+ birds and tons of back-hull feeds. This was when everything on Ku band was FREE and C band programing was dirt cheap! Like a combo package of Hbo/cinemax for $15 a year! Man those were the good ol days I guess.Back then the FCC only allowed a signal strength of 5 watts that's the reason for the big dish and the birds being only 2 degrees apart.Well I'll quit going on about these old times just looking for the answer to the first question. Thanks anybody for the answer.Sure will be glad when N3 gets coded and I'm sure everybody else will be too.
