CaptiveWorks 4000HD Information
CaptiveWorks CW-4000HD Info
First bad things:
1) If you are interested in programming, experimenting etc then this is a good receiver.
2) Simple configuration error and you will end up reloading factory default software and for that you will need to use keyboard.
3) Still not able to figure out why remote control is not working
4) Updating software is a pain and multi step process. Though you don't need to use special keys or receiver modes to uploads bin. But you will need to be patient when loading the bin.
5) Scanning is another long and difficult process especially if you are using single LNB for multi satellite. You need to know what type of LNB you have. Usually circular seems to work, but still a complicated process.
6) Need additional cables to connect Audio if not using HDMI cables.
7) Creating favorite list is not intitutive and is very tricky. I will explain it below.
8) If you make a mistake during initial setup for display. Only option after that mistake is to reload the firmware again from the CD provided. Again this is tricky as you will need to figure out right time before you can take the CD out. If you miss that critical moment then rest assured that your machine will reboot itself and again try to reload software from CD. You might be better off downloading firmware from CW's website and burning the iso image. And using keyboard and selecting the device to boot from.
Now for good things:
1) It feels like one of the best receiver once you figure out how to use the keys. (like ctrl-x when u get stuck in some application)
2) IP TV and other Web TV is great.
3) Picture quality is good. HD tv quality is much better.
4) Internet connection was easy. Simply connect cable to the router and it worked by itself
5) Remote seems better (Improved)
Couple of things that might be helpful
USE KEYBOARD FOR INITIAL CONFIGURATION. DON'T BOTHER FIGHTING WITH THE REMOTE. IT IS SIMPLY NOT INTUITIVE.
1) Understand that there are concept of users. One can create many users and depending on users settings you will have access to those applications.
2) Try to setup your own ftp internal website. That will be useful when trying to upload bins. Downloading from factory site would take longer time. Also installing bins is two step process.
step a: Download the bin
step b: select update software
3) use of keyboard
F1 key will give u available menus
Esc key will moveu to previous level
Ctrl-x to move out of any application
4) Creating Favourite list
This has to be done by creating a different user. Once the user is created then delete all the channels and add the channels you would like this favourite to have.
5) Admin password is 1111
6) If you are using keyboard then to select the options that you will see at bottom of the screen use f1,f2,f3,f4. This will correspond in sequence to the things on the screen
7) To go to command prompt type ctrl-alt-backspace
8) Be prepared to buy audio cable that will convert computer output to RCA output unless you are using hifi digital stereo system to connect audio.
9) To reinstall firmware from your created CD press F11 as soon as machine is turned on, then select the boot device using arrow keys
10) For reboot you will have to go to top menu and hit ctrl-p on key board or power button on remote. You can't power off from any other location.
11) You can use ssh and scp from any windows or unix box to connect to the box. UID=root pwd=captive. For windows you will have to download freeware copies of this softwares.

Life is too short to wake up with regrets. So love the people who treat you right.Love the ones who do not, just because you can.Believe everything happens for a reason. If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands. If it changes your life, let it.Kiss slowly.Forgive quickly.God never said life would be easy.He just promised it would be worth it.
You do not have to be crazy to be my friend, but it sure helps.................
