Default Does Time Warner Cable Really Offer 175 HD Channels In NY?

Does Time Warner Cable Really Offer 175 HD Channels In NY........?

By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (May 17, 2011) -- Time Warner Cable said yesterday that its Digital TV customers in New York City now have access to more than 175 High-Definition channels.

But do they really?

Cable and satellite TV providers often inflate their HD channel counts by adding everything from single-movie PPV channels to non-video music channels. (By example, Cox recently counted 46 Music Choice channels as HD channels; the channels showed still images of album covers in high-def so Cox said they counted as high-def channels.)

The bogus HD channel counts are designed to make a TV provider's HD lineup look more appealing compared to its rivals.

Yesterday, after Time Warner's announcement, we asked the cable operator for a list of the 175 HD channels to determine if it was using any tricks to inflate the numbers. And while Time Warner included about 6-8 PPV channels in the list -- and some duplicate HBO channels with alternative Spanish audio feeds -- the number of 'real' HD channels still came to around 170-175.

The list of HD channels also include numerous basic cable HD channels not found in the lineup of top satcaster DTV, such as AMC HD, Reelz Channel HD, Nat Geo Wild HD and E! HD.

It should be noted that Time Warner does not offer 175 HD channels in every market it serves, but the New York lineup does show a strong commitment to high-def when some of its rivals are scaling back.
"Time Warner Cable offers the best and biggest HD lineup in New York City. We're excited to announce that our customers now have access to over 175 HD channels and that additional HD On Demand channels are coming soon," said David Gray, Regional Vice President of Marketing for Time Warner Cable's East Region. "Along with the expansion of HD, we continue to augment our digital and On Demand offerings making it simple and easy for customers to access the shows they want. In an effort to deliver more programming options and value to our diverse customers, we're also introducing several international packages which provide a cost-effective option for viewing programming from around the world."
