DN Loses 135,000 Subs In 2Q
By Swanni
Washington, D.C. (August 9, 2011) -- DN said today that it lost approximately 135,000 net subscribers in the second quarter. leaving the company with just slightly more than 14 million subs overall.
The satcaster tried to soften the news by proclaiming that revenue increased 13.3 percent ($3.59 billion) in the second quarter, compared to the 2010 second quarter.
"DN delivered another quarter of strong growth in revenue and net income," Joe Clayton, president and CEO of DN said in a statement.
But the sub decline is a blow for DN which has made several moves in the past year to increase subs and be more competitive with rival DTV. The latter satcaster last week reported that it gained 26,000 net subs in the second quarter, the lowest quarterly gain in DTV's history.
To turn things around, D*sh said today that it will freeze prices through January 2013, although the company blamed "higher levels of discounting" as well as increased competitive pressure for its sub losses.
D*sh reported that it gained approximately 58,000 subscribers in the first quarter of this year, erasing a streak of three straight losing quarters.
