How the toucan keeps its cool
The toucan’s recognizable beak has long fascinated ornithologists who have struggled to understand what function it serves. Some speculate that it is adapted to peel fruit, while others, including Charles Darwin, have suggested that it might be used to attract a mate. Scientists, however, now believe that the beak may help toucans regulate body temperature. Both elephants and rabbits release heat through their ears, and researchers using infrared cameras were able to show that toco toucans do the same thing with their bills. By altering blood flow to the beak’s surface, the animals can adjust their internal temperature by as much as 27° F
