iLink 9500HD Dual Silent Fan Mod -How to guide
c/p kronik
1) Start with gathering your materials. I used:
- iLink 9500HD Receiver (of course make sure it is turned off and unplugged)
- 32mm Aluminum Heatsink
- Scythe Mini-Kaze Silent 40mm Fans (2x)
- Thermal Tape + Scissors
- Soldering Iron, Solder, 1/8" Heatshrink Tubing
- Wire Strippers
- Silicone Gun + Silicone
2) Cut + apply thermal tape to the underside of the heatsink, and attach the heatsink to the board’s main processor. (It says NEC Japan on it)
*You can also notice in the first pic I have changed out the heatsinks on the 8psk board for bigger ones, simply shave off the old ones with a razor and glue down some bigger ones....which I also recommend but won't get into now.
3) Cut the connectors off the fans (if any) and solder the 2 fans together in a parallel circuit, with a lead coming off each wire. (Connect red to red and black to black) Be sure to seal up the joints with heatshrink after you are done.
4) Carefully peel apart the ribbon cable coming from the power supply board into the main board. Look closely at the power supply board where the ribbon connects, you will see small numbers.....7V, GND (ground), 24V, 12V, etc.....Cut and solder the red lead into the 12V cable and the black ground into one of the ground cables. Of course be sure to seal up your joints with heatshrink.
5) Carefully trim off a section of the non-functioning card-reader slot, so you will be able to fit a fan behind the module....I used a small hacksaw to do this.
6) Place a fair amount of silicone on the bottom of each fan, and press them into place.....you want enough silicone to hold the fans, but make sure you dont use too much so that it squishes all over the board.
*Note when you place the fan in behind the card-reader slot....ensure you bend the 8psk's cable out of the way as much as possible to allow for maximum airflow from the fan.
7) Carefully place the top case back on, ensuring you do not disturb the fans. (Once the silicone is dry you wont have to be so careful). Go ahead and plug it in and fire it up. Enjoy your new cool + quiet iLink 9500HD.
