With so many people asking "What do I put in the (any) section for the ihub" I thought I would put together a little something educational. Teach a man to fish....

So. Think of the SV + IHub as a computer that you can't put software on. You can even think of it as a game console. They all have the same networking requirements.

1) Everything on the internet has an address!
Since the SV+ihub is nothing more than a thing that needs to sit on the internet, it needs an address!
It is called an IP address (like a street number). Like a house, you can't just pick any number, it has to be the same type as your neighbors or in this case local network. Options include local private network with a router (they start with 10. and 192.) or public internet address (if you are connected directly to a modem. Most people will be using a router so lets go with that idea. You can then assign your SV+IHub a number or you can let your router do it. The router does this by means of DHCP. With DHCP turned off, you have to assign your own "static" IP, and it can't be the same as any other address on your network, they all have to be unique!.

2) Getting off your network
Once you have an address, you need to get out of your network. Just like leaving your street, you have to drive to a certain location that gives you access to other streets. Thats called your "Gateway". It tells sv+Ihub where to go to get off the network. In the case of a router, it would be your routers address, there is no other way to get out to the internet!
Here is a trick: to find your gateway, take your computer or sv IP and make the last number a 1. So if your SV+Ihub has an address of 192.168.0.100 then your gateway would be 192.168.0.1

3) Port Numbers
Think of port numbers like apartments in an appartment building. You know the address of the building (IP Address) but you want to get to a certain apartment specifically (Port) because that is where grandma lives. No point looking for grandma in the wrong apartment, she won't be there to give you candy! SonicView's apartment number is 1920. Where you leave from depends on how easy it is to get out of the building, some doors are locked (firewall). Default 1920 is usually fine.

4) DNS
DNS = Domain name server. Everyone talk about svftaiks.com as the server but remember everything on the internet has an address. So the domain name server acts as an address lookup to find out what IP address svftaiks.com has. You can find this out and set it manually (from a command prompt type: ping svftaiks.com) or you can let DNS handle this for you. Since your router can find the address via the DNS servers it attaches to you can set the DNS server to your routers address (remember the IP that usually ends in 1?) or you could manually enter your internet providors DNS IP, but I wouldn't bother.

A note on subnet mask: Subnet mask is just a way to tell your computer how big the network or neighborhood is. 255.255.255.0 usually works just fine for local networks.

With all this in mind you have enough tools in your arsenal to network anything in your home. Just think about how am I getting my information out of the network and to the internet. Is there anything information that my SV+IHub is missing to get where it needs to go? Do I have a correct local IP? Do I have a correct gateway? Do I have a correct destination address? (DNS or static IP) Does everything in my SV+IHub look similar to my other computers on the network in terms of network setup? Afterall, your SV+IHub is just like any other computer on the network!
