Default Eliminate USB Stick Problems

Many of you had posted stating that you are having issues with your USB memory sticks not loading the file onto the receiver, and you are asking what brand of USB stick should be used.

ALL USB sticks will work.

However, what is causing a lot of you to have the issues is the USB drivers are trying to load their software onto the receiver.
This happens with USB sticks that have the "Jump Drive" programs working from the stick. These programs work on your computer when the USB is plugged in and the program loads (contains games, password protection etc.).
A complete uninstall of the software from the USB stick as well as a FORMAT is required to make sure that the stick has nothing saved on it.
I had purchased a SanDisk 4 GB USB drive that had the software and I had issues loading the file onto my receiver.

After I had done a complete removal of the software from the USB stick, the USB works great.
My friend had the same issue but with a Lexar drive that he had purchased.
The problem existed until he removed the "Jump Drive" software.

The Problem with these USB Keys is a combination of 2 things.
1.) Multiple Partitions on USB Key.

Manufacturers like Sandisk have their 'U3' Software loaded on the USB Key by default, this takes up room on the Key and the problem is this is a separate partition that is formatted with CDFS (Same as a CD-ROM) Which allows the software to auto-run when the USB Key is inserted into a PC. Microsoft has disabled Auto-run from USB Devices to prevent USB Key Viruses or Data Harvesters from running automatically, so this is why they have to use a CDFS Partition.

The problem is Windows will not allow you to format a CDFS Partition, as it thinks the partition is read-only (and thus safe to auto run)

If you visit the Sandisk website forum there is a thread about the U3 Uninstaller which will remove the CDFS partition from the USB Key and allow you to use the Key with the STB.

2.) Incompatibility due to USB Key Size.

Due to the Price Drop in USB Keys most people are now carrying around 1GB+ USB Keys, but the problem is the Programmers of the STB have not designed the auto-load software on all Receivers to look in memory locations so vast. If this is the case, try going out and spending $5.00 on a 256MB USB Key to use strictly for BIN Updates
