What is wrong when display reads noch and the menue wont come on?

It sounds like you did a factory default and the receiver needs to be setup again or on a sat that has not been scanned for channels.

This set is straight out of the box. It has never shown a menue and never scanned a bird. Any suggestions?

Viewsat is a reliable receiver and to say that a new receiver will not show a menu.I think something else is your problem.Maybe your receiver to tv connection.Check it out and let us know.

You are right. The tv had tobe set atvideo1 instead of channel 3.
