Default Viewsat + XFTA how to: The complete guide

C/P from GMan
Xfta with viewsat - how-to:
First, you must configure your receiver.

You will need 3 files that are in your receivers file section.
1.The latest system cleaner file.
2.The latest factory file.
3.110509 fix file.

A. Now, Install the file from the first link. Then, do a factory default and reboot. After that, install the file from the second link. Then, do a factory default and reboot again. Finally, install the third file then do a factory default and reboot. Now, configure your receiver by setting up sats and scanning. Make sure the free channels like DNFYI 101 work for you.

B. Connect the XFTA router to the wall AC plug-point. Wait 1 min for the lights to come on. Now, connect the lan 1 port (or any other lan port) to your PC (make sure to disable wireless adapter on your PC, if you have one, so that you are only using your LAN adapter).

C. Open your web browser (DO NOT use Internet Explorer - use Firefox or Google Chrome). In the addressbar, type in 192.168.1.1 and press ENTER. You will now see a screen as shown below. Type the default password as 'password' (without the single quotes) and then change it to a new, more secure password of your choice. Download the latest xfta firmware hereFile needed is below) extract it on your PC. Now go to System -> Firmware Upgrade and select the extracted trx firmware to upgrade. After that do a factory reset (also under System).

NOTE: If at anytime, you made a mistake and did not READ and follow CAREFULLY, you can start over from scratch after pressing and holding the RESET button with a pin/pen tip for 1 minute (the xfta MUST be plugged in for at least a minute BEFORE pressing the reset button and it should be CONTINUALLY plugged in and NEVER unplugged). AFTER pressing the RESET button for 1 minute and ONLY AFTER waiting for 1 MORE minute, unplug the power cord and re-plug it. Now wait for a minute. Settings will now be re-set back to factory. If this fails, try once again as you probably did it wrong.

D. Ater that, go to Connection. You will see a screen similar to the picture below.

Here, you need to set up your XFTA's internet connectivity. You have several options.
1) Gateway - also means you are wiring it as either your main router or a wired client to your router. Choose this option if you hate wireless or if you don't have a router and wish to use this as one. You would need to connect the WAN port to the LAN port of the main router or switch (not necessary, if you are planning to use it wirelessly connected to your main router) AFTER completely setting up the xfta. For WAN IP, it is best to use the DHCP option. As for LAN IP, it is best to set a static IP so you know what the IP is and can access the web interface again. But the LAN IP MUST be in the same subnet as your main router's IP. If you are not sure about your main router's IP, you can easily fiure that out by going to command prompt (Start -> Run -> Type cmd and press ENTER -> now type ipconfig/all and press ENTER -> your router's IP will be under the heading Default Gateway of your currently used Network adapter, which in this case should be Local Area Network). So, if your Default gateway/main router's IP is 192.168.1.1, Your xfta's LAN IP should be between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254 and is best set at a higher IP like 192.168.1.155. If your gateway/main router's IP is 192.168.4.1 (just another example), your xfta's LAN IP would be similar to 192.168.4.155. The key point in this is that the first 3 PARTS of the xfta's LAN IP MUST MATCH with the gateway/main router's IP. After setting it to 192.168.X.155 - check everything and click on 'Save Changes.' In about a minute, you should be able to access the xfta page again by typing the new 192.168.X.155 IP in the web browser's addressbar and pressing enter.
However, if you are using the xfta as your main router, you can just set the LAN IP as 192.168.1.1.

2) Wireless Bridge/Repeater - This option should be selected if you want to use the xfta wirelessly connected to the internet and don't want a long Ethernet/Cat5 cable connecting to your receiver. When you select this option, you must select the bridge IP that MUST be in the same subnet as your gateway/main router's IP. If you are not sure about your main router's IP, you can easily fiure that out by going to command prompt (Start -> Run -> Type cmd and press ENTER -> now type ipconfig/all and press ENTER -> your router's IP will be under the heading Default Gateway of your currently used Network adapter, which in this case should be Local Area Network - ALSO NOTE down the subnet from here). So, if your Default gateway/main router's IP is 192.168.1.1, Your xfta's bridge IP should be between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254 and is best set at a higher IP like 192.168.1.155. If your gateway/main router's IP is 192.168.4.1 (just another example), your xfta's bridge IP would be similar to 192.168.4.155. The key point in this is that the first 3 PARTS of the xfta's bridge IP MUST MATCH with the gateway/main router's IP. Also enter the now KNOWN gateway/main router's IP in the field 'AP/Gateway IP.' Also, using the ipconfig/all, you should have also noted down the subnet which can be entered in the 'Subnet Mask' field in the xfta's wireless bridge/repeater setting unter connection.
As for the 'WAN Ethernet Port' field, the options there indicate what you want to do with the WAN port. You can leave it as is, disable or switch it for an additional LAN port. You don't need the WAN access anymore as you are using the wirless feature.
Under the 'Custom DNS' field, it is best to add two DNS: a) Add 8.8.4.4 and then b) add another DNS 8.8.8.8 - these are google's DNS and reduce the number of hops and help with freezing issues.

In the next tab, choose 'Connect via Client Bridge.'

As for the 'Reapeater' option, you can set it as 'Repeater Disabled.' This option basically asks you if you want to get another wireless signal from your router or not. If you enable this feature, you can have an additional wireless signal apart from your main router. This feature is glitchy, but is mainly used in case you want to increase your wireless connectivity range in your house by adding an additional access point. You must set an SSID (a connection name) and security for the same if you do enable it. But note that the radio range for the xfta is limited. This means that if the repeater is disabled, the full wireless radio will be used ONLY for connecting to the main router. However, if repeater is enabled, although you will get an additional wireless access point, your client radio range will be compromised and reduced to HALF of the original range. So, this is a double-edged sword. Also it can be glitchy with intermittent connection loss and hence FREEZING. So ONLY use this if you are interested in testing it out.

Leave Transmit power to 'Max.' I have no clue why would one want to decrease the transmit power and why that feature is there; probably to limit your wireless range so that if it is set to unsecured, people won't be able to catch your signal. Otherwise, a useless feature.

SSID to Join - Click scan and then select the internet connection you wish to join. Once you do that, you only need to key in the password. Alternatively, if you don't want to scan and like to make your life more difficult for some weird reason, you can get all the settings from your computer's network connections manually and plug them in.

Recommended to stop HERE!!!

Check your wireless channel you got after scanning. If it says 1 or 6 or 11 - be advised that, MANY routers use the exact SAME frequency and can cause a Young's double-slit expertiment of interference effect and intermittent connectivity loss and hence FREEZING. So it is best to first go to your main router's web page and change the wireless channel to anything other than 1, 6 or 11 and DON'T FORGET to do the same in the xfta (as this MUST match). If you don't know how, please refer to your router's manual and do some READING.
Now, check everything again and click on 'Save Changes.' Wait for 1 minute. In your browser's addressbar, type in the newly set bridge IP (192.168.X.155) and press ENTER. You should see the gargoyle web interface again.

TO MAKE SURE THE SETTINGS WORKED, JUST TRY ACCESSING THE INTERNET. IF YOU CAN'T THEN YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG AND NEED TO RESET AND START OVER FROM SCRATCH.

E. Now, go to 'Satellite.' You should see the screen below:

DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING other than what is mentioned in the guide.

1) First, under General Settings, check 'enable rq-sssp client' and select Logging - 'to file.'
2) Under Receiver Settings, select the SSSP Protocol as Viewsat.
3) Now, under Card Server Settings (picture shown below), click on 'Remove' to remove the Default newcamd server.

You need to define the NFPS card server here. Under Protocol, select newcamd. Under Host, type in the server Sent to you (like fenfu.dynsite.net). Under port, use ONE of the ports sent to you. Under username, type in the 14 digit access code. Under password, type in the 14 digit access code ONCE AGAIN. Under DES Key type in the 28 digit number 6103403445406970987123412134. Put a check mark under Enabled, but DO NOT put a check mark under send EMMs. This option is used for resharing, but is not compatible with NFPS. Check everything and then click 'Add.' Very important - Type in the the Control Words Timeout box as 2 - this is the most OPTIMAL value for fastest channel changing and to prevent freezing and network stream error issues. Now, click on 'Save All.' Now, scroll to top and click on 'Build config.' Hit 'Save all' again and then do a hard reboot of the xfta. Now go to the same gargoyle page again and hit Start.' THen click on 'LogViewer' to make sure everything is fine. It should say newcamd card_server_url (your codes, server, ports, DES KEY)... connected and 'Client Waiting for Requests.' If it doesn't say that and it doesn't connect, check to make sure all info is correct and if so, fill out the Donation Not Working form at ftazeta so we can fix the code.

F. Finally, unplug the xfta and then plug it behind the viewsat receiver and connect the black Null modem cable DIRECTLY into the receiver. Wait for 1 minute for the xfta to start up. In the receiver, browse to channel 200 and you should now have TV.

Default Setup of X-Fta Dongle Using WIRED

Setup of X-Fta Dongle Using WIRED by mechanicman

Step 1.

reason for using wired is if you are having a hard time setting up as wireless and cant get it working or maybe your viewsat keeps freezing or going off, you can eliminate a bad wifi router etc using wired.

Log into the X-Fta dongle by connecting your pc (Ethernet cable out of your PC) into
one of the 4 lan ports, not the Wan for grabbing a dhcp ip address, after that, you log
into the web interface by typing 192.168.1.1 into the url bar of your web browser. (Use
of Firefox is strongly suggested) DO NOT USE EXPLORER. Password is password

Step 2.

Go to the connection page, make sure Gateway(default) under device config is selected, then "connect via" should be DHCP wired.
Local Network /LAN should be set to something other than your router ip..so if your router is 192.168.1.1 then set it at 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.5.1.. got that...
Remember after you change this number and save, you will need to type that number
into the url bar when you want to access your X-Fta dongle from now on.
The subnet mask should already be set at 255.255.255.0. you can leave wireless enabled.
now the hard part....click on "save changes" the hard part is waiting the 5 or so minutes.. now try to login using your new ip such as 192.168.2.1 like mine is set at...if you cant log in then unplug the cat 5 cable from your computer and plug right back in.. wait 5 seconds and try again to log in..

Step 3.

Now that you are logged back in go to satellite:
Go to the satellite menu and under serial port activate /dev/tts/0. now move up and check enable rq-sssp.
Then go down to receiver settings and select which type of satellite receiver you have which should be viewsat ...Coolsat, Captiveworks or gbox for all others.
then go down to the bottom newcamd entry already there and click edit..now remove any entries or paste right over them
Enter your Private server info..Host ,Port, Username, Password, DES Key.

after that click ‘save all’ followed by build config file and then save all again.

step 4

unplug the xfa and move to your viewsat. Attach the dongle to the xfta and plug in the dongle that came with the xfta into the viewsat, plug in the internet cable from your router to the WAN port of the xfta.. NOT the LAN port.
Ok now plug in the power of the XFTA. turn on the viewsat.. In a few minutes you should have TV. This is assuming your viewsat has an WF file on it (i use a newer one from 2011), and that you have scanned your channels and at least should have the free 101 working to verify your antenna settings..
a bit of advice: delete any channels not on your server. going to one of these bad channels will cause box to get stuck and take a while for pic to come on.

now you can always access the xfta by plugging a LAN from your computer to any Lan of the xfta and use the same ip you previously set such as 192.168.2.1.. or you can connect to the xfta by wireless of your laptop if you left wireless enabled, which i do.

X-FTA dongle set up w/ pics Perhaps this will help some people who are very close that are just missing a few step and perhaps this will help them.
c/p

Step 1 Turn on the dongle and wait 2 minutes. Log into the x fta dongle by connecting your PC to one of the 4 LAN ports. Personally I use LAN2 and then let DHCP grab a IP. After that USE FIREFOX and log into x fta dongle by typing 192.168.1.1 in the browser url and hit enter

Step 2

Go to the connection page. Select wireless bridge. Set the bridge IP to and address in the subbnet of your primary router... basically if you MAIN wireless routers IP is 192.168.0.1 then set the xfta dongle to 192.168.0.2 or similar. and if main wireless router IP is 192.168.1.1 then set xfta router IP to 192.168.1.2 or similar like in pic and make sure you set subnet to 255.255.255.0 like in pic, also very important you must in the A/P Gateway IP you must put in your wireless router IP just as I have showed in the pic.. It will be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.0
once you change and save it will reboot and take at least 2 minutes.

I pointed arrows to other things that should be set.

Remember to after you change this number you must SAVE and to get back into router you MUST put the number that put in... like i show in the pic. I mean like when you log in via firefox to log into xfta dongle.

step 3.
Relocate your x fta dongle from your PC to your Sat box and connect the serial cable that came with your satellite receiver to your xfta dongle. However I just plug in the serial cable that the unit comes with and turn on both units. Wait about 2 minutes. before you go to your pc and try to log into your xfta dongle then scan . This will scan for your wireless router and it will find it and put in your password / passphrase to get by your router security.

then you have to set up your Private server.

Im sure you can do that on your own. its very easy.

also Viewsat the pic should look like this.

then go here select Network S/W Version and hit OK / Select and you should see that pop in or something similar..
once you do you are in business ... However you must have server / satellite set up and RUNNING. I would show more but I'm in a RUSH.

if you need help with that let me know. the satellite part but its sooooooooooooooo easy make sure you get used to the
LOG VIEWER so you can see if you are connected..

here these pics should help

once you set up server you must click build RQSSP before you run or try to set up viewsat as in pics above.

remember I said about the log viewer LOOK

Once you have this set up and your viewsat pics look like the ones above You have TV!
go to HBO or CNN and enjoy TV! but it must say connected and wfemu caid map cksum OK or as it does all above.
