Mexico police arrest infamous drug lord

Thu, 30 Apr 2009 12:47:40 GMT

The head of the infamous Mexican drug ring 'Los Zetas' has been arrested in the frontier city of Matamoros in the Central American country.

The 44-year-old drug lord identified by the police as Gregorio Sauceda Gamboa used to play a central role in the Gulf Cartel and in leading Los Zetas assassins.

Sauceda, who has been on the Mexican police's most wanted list for years, has been charged with organized crime and violations of federal weapons and ammunitions laws, AFP reported.

The arrest on Wednesday is considered a success for Mexican President Filipe Caldern, who is under pressure for his launch of a military campaign to crackdown on drug cartels.

Mexican drug rings, which are engaged in an endless war to seize drug routes, are quite active on the US Mexican border.

"We have a serious gang problem here and have for a long time ... I believe we have more gangs than any other county on the border," said Sheriff Guadalupe Trevino in semi-rural Texas Hidalgo County which lies to the north of the Rio Grande River separating Texas and Mexico.

Drug-related violence has taken 7,300 lives in Mexico since 2008.
