Meanwhile, Americans who fail to sign up for a medical plan after health care overhaul takes effect could be hit with fines of up to $3,800, according to a new proposal circulated Tuesday by a senior Democrat.

The proposed fines are part of a proposal from Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., a moderate who heads the influential Finance Committee. Baucus was meeting Tuesday with a small group of senators trying to engineer a bipartisan compromise to break the stalemate. His plan would guarantee coverage for nearly all Americans at a cost to taxpayers of under $900 billion over 10 years. Some experts consider that a bargain, since the country now spends around $2.5 trillion a year on health care.

The fines would be the stick to enforce a proposed requirement that all Americans get health insurance, much as auto coverage is now mandatory. The penalties would start at $750 a year for individuals, and $1,500 for families. Households making more than three times the federal poverty level — about $66,000 for a family of four — would face the maximum fines. For families, it would be $3,800, and for individuals, $950.

Baucus would offer carrots as well: tax credits to help pay premiums for households making up to three times the poverty level, and for small employers paying about average middle-class wages. People working for companies that offer coverage could avoid the fines by signing up.

SHit it is only the beginng, 60 yr olds will have to pay 5 times more than 20 yr olds, if youy smoke you have to pay more. if your your an ilieagal alien you are exempt from fines.

shit this is one that I don't even want to get started on, more or less, in short what this means if you have insurance already, your ok, doesn't matter if it is from being in the service or something through your state government, just as long as you have some form of insurance than your ok and could get tax credit for it at the end of the year, if you make below a certain amount. However, if you have no insurance than this does apply to you, what we seem to have now and it's becoming a big problem is people milking the government and some employers even helping out by saying they offer no insurance to people can get low cost insurance or even free insurance from the government, like tenncare and food stamps and so on, this is what tax payers pay for out of there pocket and that pisses me off. Our you have people out there that will not take out insurance where they work because they say it's too high, which is bs, because without that insurance they would pay even more when having to go to the doctor and get medicine. People working there ass off pay for alot of this shit going on now, and then there is the earned income that gets paid out to the people out there that have kids and don't pay in hardly any federal tax but get back up to 6,000 or more on taxes, which we pay for as well. Shit I don't get back all my federal tax and have to give half of it to IRS, and I have kids to, so the system is messed up in short and a lot of people are getting away with living off others and having life a lot easier than the ones that are trying to make all the right moves, such as carry insurance on your home,cars,medical, and anything else that may help one out should you need it. Just my 2 cents.

in these clinics you pay the going price. not state controlled pay full price for medicine except wal-mart 5.00 deal children usually get a cold,U.R.I.,E.N.T. USUALLY $45.00 + $5.00 meds,PPO and HMO COST $65.00 weekly out of paycheck which $260.00 monthly which if you have a catastropic illness still won't cover everthing so you still owe the hospital anyways. when my daughter was shot by a neighbor i payed it out. they tried to refuse a low payment. if they do here ,the bill is consider paid. preventative medicine helps. now dental is another subject. during the course of a childs life usually get sick about 2 times yearly what i feel if its manditory insurance a company are going to soak you for all they can get, and profit is going to be out of this world because they can say we have to insure catostropic illness which they refuse now with health questions at present
